Wolf Hybrids

A wolf hybrid is also known as a wolf dog hybrid or wolfdog. It is a cross between a wolf and a dog. Crossing between these two animals has become popular in the last 100 years. There are approximetely 300,000 wolf hybrids in the United States. Dogs are usually crossed with gray wolves. Wolf like dogs such as German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are usually crossed with wolves.

No one can predict the pyhicial or behavioral characteristics of the wolf hybrid because of their genetic mixtures. There is known evidence of wolf hybrids in the history. Fossil evidence of wolfdogs dates back to 10,000 years in the North America. Teotihuacan civilization in Mexico kept hybrid wolf and used them in the art of that culture. The first record of wolf hybrid puppies in Great Britian was in 1766. There, they were pruchased by Englsh noblemen.

Wolf hybrids are healthy animals and have fewer inherited disease than most typical dogs. They are healthier than either parent because of the heterosis. Most hybrid dogs are very curious and destructive than typical dogs. Because of the mixture of genetic traits, their behavior pattern is less predictable compared to wolf or a dog. Not all wolf hybrids are agressive, but there are numerous of wolf hybrid related attacks in the United States and usually most of them include children. Wolf hybrids need lots of socialization and training. Most wolf hybirds kept wolf like characteristics such as howling, digging and chewing up furniture.

Wolf hybrid puppies need early socialization. These animals must be kept in proper enviroment. Wolf hybrids require lots of space to run and roam. They are not dogs for urban living. A farm is an ideal place for wolf hybrids. They will not be happy animals if their own doesn't provide space and proper living conditions.
